A Year in Review with Overhead Door

2012 was quite the year for us here at Overhead Door. As we enter 2013, we’re taking time to look back at what happened in the garage door industry this past year and preparing for things to come in the next. With the U.S. Department of Commerce expecting an increase in homebuilding in the coming months, it’s likely that we’ll see growing demand in the garage door industry.

Recently, we sat down with Joe Dachowicz, Vice President of Marketing, to discuss garage door industry trends from 2012 and what we can expect in 2013.

What trends did you see in 2012 and how did Overhead Door respond?

2012 was an exciting year for the garage door industry. As more homeowners recognize their garage door as an important element of their home’s exterior, we are seeing a renewed focus on garage door design. Even with an increased focus on style, homeowners aren’t necessarily looking to break the bank, and so, it’s important that we provide a wide range of options and price points for our customers.

Specifically, Overhead Door introduced the Carriage House and Traditional Wood Collections as a way to respond to the demands for additional options that deliver style and enhanced curb appeal. Carriage House Collection garage doors combine the look of wood with the durability of steel. The collection also appeals to homeowners because it reduces the maintenance that is often associated with wood garage doors. For those looking for a classic option, the Traditional Wood Collection, available in rail-and-stile and flush designs, is constructed from the finest Cedar, Hemlock and Mahogany woods to enhance a home’s overall style and curb appeal.

What about technology advancements?

As technology advances and people’s lives become increasingly busy, homeowners are looking for the latest safety features and technologies to secure their homes. To answer that request, we introduced the Overhead Door® Advanced Wall Console and the Door Report™ remote. The Advanced Wall Console provides homeowners with greater control of door operation, security and garage lighting, while the Door Report remote emits warning signals to assure the garage door closes properly. In addition to safety advancements from garage door accessories, homeowners are looking for door collections designed with multiple safety features, including pinch-resistant operation and tamper-resistant brackets.

Going forward, we believe homebuyers will continue to expect builders and manufacturers to offer an extensive range of garage doors and accessories. Overhead Door is committed to offering a full line of residential and commercial products to meet these demands.

What other trends do you expect to see in 2013?

With reports of building permits at their highest levels since 2008, it’s likely that we will see an uptick in garage door sales and installations in the coming months. As the market improves, homeowners will look for the latest home building products and design options. Homeowners will be asking for features to enhance their home’s safety and curb appeal, and, thanks to our lineup of new products and our professional Overhead Door distributors, we are prepared to address the increased demand in 2013.

What advice can Overhead Door distributors offer homeowners as they consider a new garage door system?

Distributors must understand the consumer’s needs and offer the best garage door to fit each customer’s personal style. They should ask basic questions, such as:

• What style or collection will best enhance the look of the home?
• Does this garage door fit into the consumer’s price range?
• How does this garage door fit this person’s lifestyle?

As stated in Remodeling Magazine’s New Cost vs. Value Report, replacing a basic garage door with a mid-range or upscale model is one of the smartest and best value buys prior to a home sale. It’s important for homeowners to realize the value that a garage door can bring to their home, whether that is for a new home installation or garage door replacement, and it’s important for the distributor to convey that message to our customers.
